Town of Canton: A Message From First Selectman Robert Bessel: River Access At 37 Bridge Street

Government and Politics

June 25, 2022

From: Town of Canton

Dear Residents,
As you might have heard, last Wednesday's Town Meeting approved the Town’s plan to purchase land behind Collinsville Canoe & Kayak (CCK) and the boat ramp (click here to see the map). This parcel will eventually provide public access to the boat launch and some additional public parking. But at this time, there is no change to the boat launch or parking area. Here’s why:

The Town Meeting decision enables the Town to seek final approval from the State for a real estate closing. Until this closing occurs, it remains business as usual for CCK. We ask everyone to kindly respect their private property and to follow the rules that govern parking, launching and river access. Please also note that the floating dock belongs to CCK; it should not be used by the public at any time.

We anticipate the final approval process will take several months.

While we wait, the Board of Selectmen, in consultation with the River Access Sub-Committee, will develop the easements, access, signage, and sharing arrangements.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please email them to me at [email protected].  Our goal is to find a reasonable balance between supporting local businesses, providing public access to the river, and parking for visitors.  Your ideas are welcome.

Stay well,
Bob
