Witt Elementary School

220 North Third Street
217-594-2231

History:

Witt Elementary School has a rich history. In the late 1800's the community of Witt developed around a bend in the railroad. At the beginning of the 1900's the community entered a boom time, with the opening of two coal mines. The community grew and flourished during this time. The coal mines drew many immigrants from England and middle Europe.

In 1901 the community consolidated its neighborhood schools and formed the Witt School District. It built and added on to the present building several times. The building housed an average of two hundred students kindergarten through twelfth grade.

When the coal mines closed in the late 1920's the community began a decline that continues to the present. Witt's present population is approximately 700. Some of the local businesses include the school, a post office, a parade float business, three antique stores, a tavern, Casey's, a restaurant, an auto repair shop, an electrical business, and an elevator.

In 1997, due to declining enrollment and finances, the Witt School District was annexed into the Hillsboro School District. The former facilities of the Witt School District are now called Witt Elementary School and the Pre-K Building. Witt Elementary School has over 100 students kindergarten through fifth grade, and Pre-K has twenty-four students.
