History

In 1912 a few members of the First and Mathewson (Central) congregation who lived on the west side started meeting in their homes. They erected their first building at 1006 Maple and began meeting on march 22, 1914, with about thirty-five members

Brother Homer E. Moore assisted in setting the congregation in order two years later. A.S. Parish, Otis Broadus and J.H. Hopkins were the first elders. The congregation selected H.O. Burk and O.G. Corn as deacons

Next they selected lots and built a larger building at the corner of University and Walnut, They held the first meeting there on September 9,1924. The church continued to grow and built the building at our present location in 939. The church has assisted in the establishment of several locations beginning with the emporia Avenue congregation in 1930.

The church has actively supported several missionary efforts. At the present time the work in south Africa and trips to evangelize other parts of Africa through World Bible Study are a main effort. Through the years, and the present time, the church gives some support to Maude Carpenters Children's home.

The Worship service is praised filled, Vibrant and spiritual. The church is composed of a friendly group of people. The desire of the church, with the help of God, is to reach out with the gospel and with a helping hand to the community it serves.
