Waterford Church of the Bretheren

301 Church Street
209-874-9804

We are an active and friendly congregation of under 200 members, seeking together to grow in the likeness of Christ. We are a New Testament fellowship of believers.

The Church of the Brethren gradually developed nearly 300 years ago in Germany. In 1708, those leaving the state church of that area known simply as "Brethren." Also known as "Dunkers," their baptized for believers by immersion distinguished them from those who have been baptize as infants. The Brethren were, and are, peaceful Christians who emphasize duty to God and to our neighbors. The Church came to America in 1719.

Begun in 1918, the Waterford Church of the Brethren is one of the two oldest churches in our community.

We have no creed but the New Testament practices the full love fest Communion and baptize by trine immersion.

We practice the anointing of the sick, believing that God is the Healer.

We believe in no force in matters of faith. We work in cooperation with other groups and churches. We strive for the plain, simple life and seek to truly be a family of faithful brothers and sisters of Christ our Lord.

We teach the basic evangelical truth of Christ held in common by the other Christian Churches.

The Church of the Brethren sponsors six colleges, one of which is the University of LaVerne in Southern California, and one Theological Seminary in Oak Brook, Illinois. National offices are in Elgin, Illinois

The Brethren have been involved in many different projects to minister to people through the years. We were involved in the founding of CROP, that distributes food and clothing to the needy overseas. We founded Heifer Project, which distributes livestock to developing nations. We maintain mission projects in Africa, India, and elsewhere.

The Peace Corps was modeled from Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS) which begun in 1948. We work at being peace makers of warring world. We believe that our purpose is for the Glory of God and the good of others. We attempt that in our daily living.

The Waterford Brethren are involved in community and in area ministries. We seek witness to Christ as Lord and Savior in our Worship, our study, prayer, our fellowship, and our service.
