About Clinic - History

A history of community caring

As a successful banker in Rhinelander, WI, the late Larry Springer organized a free clinic for his community. When he and his wife built a home near Peshtigo, WI, he soon saw the need for a clinic in this area to serve low-income, uninsured residents.

In 1998-99, Mr. Springer and a group of caring citizens met to determine whether a free clinic would be feasible for Marinette and Menominee counties. Mr. Springer sought and received financial support from Aurora Health Care and Bay Area Medical Center. The idea caught on: medical, dental, social services and clerical personnel volunteered their time and skills while area companies, civic organizations and individuals generously helped meet the new clinic's financial needs.

Twin Counties Free Clinic was granted 501(c)(3) non-profit status in May 1999 and now models a good community caring for the less fortunate. Over ten years later, businesses, organizations and private citizens continue to support Larry Springer's vision to offer free, basic health services for uninsured, low-income adults in Marinette and Menominee counties.

Mission:

To provide a system of basic, non -emergent healthcare for low income uninsured residents of Marinette County, Wisconsin and Menominee County, Michigan.
