The area in those days was inhabited by Indians...The Winnebagoe, Fox, Illinois, Sauk and Potawotomi. The Village of Knowles, an unincorporated village which is still centrally located in the Town of Lomira, actually evolved several years earlier than the Town of Lomira. A history of the Village of Knowles was written by Mrs. Evelyn Schreiber, Mrs. Dorothy Breit, Mrs. Gertrude Reible, Mrs. Donetta Mutz, Mrs. Linda Schroeder, Mrs. Bonnie Gassner and Mrs. Viola Kliefoth, around 1977. There are several of the writers living in the area today. A source for reading this very interesting history can be obtained by contacting the Town Clerk.
