A 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization, Symphony847 (Sym847) is a unique ensemble that exists to enrich, innovate, and reimagine the symphony orchestra experience for the 21st century. Founded by a group of local professionals out of the desire for a professional, collaborative environment, Sym847 presents the established orchestral repertoire alongside less familiar works, chamber music, new music, and pieces from popular genres.

Sym847 strives to create distinctive performance experiences by presenting established orchestral repertoire alongside less familiar works, chamber music, new music, and pieces from popular genres.

Founded in 2020 by musicians living in Chicago’s North Shore, Sym847 embodies collaboration and respect for one another’s artistry and a shared belief in the importance of revitalizing the role of music in our lives.

Sym847’s mission is to make music relevant to new generations of audiences through diverse performance experiences that combine a range of genres with fresh interpretations of classic works. Unconstrained by the restrictive audience protocols or repertoire of traditional orchestras, Sym847 is modern and sustainable, showing that orchestral and chamber music can survive and flourish in the 21st century.

Our programming includes large-format symphonies, new pieces by local composers, and unique arrangements for chamber ensembles; its current focus is on works adapted for small chamber orchestra with flexible instrumentation. This repertoire is of interest as an artistic challenge, as well as a practical solution to budgetary constraints and COVID-19 restrictions.

The ensemble flexibility of Symphony847 is especially suited to the challenges of the current arts economy. Sym847 adjusts its size to suit the needs of various repertoire and concert venues. Sym847 also streamlines its administrative costs by utilizing musicians in administrative roles. Ensemble members serve as executive director, orchestra librarian, personnel manager, and marketing director. Sym847 seeks out musicians who are first-tier performers with multiple skill-sets, to help the group continue to flourish in a highly competitive field.

Sym847’s flexible size enables us to produce concerts at unique venues in and around the northern suburbs of Chicago, including: restaurants, clubs, parks, churches, among others. Venues interested in booking Sym847 in any of its ensemble sizes should visit our Book Us page.
