History

Many people think of the little red brick church on the corner as St. John's Episcopal Church. But its real name is St. John the Baptist Episcopal church a name that harks back to its history.

The parish remains tiny, with 30 people attending an average Sunday service in the village, which has a population of 500.

In the 1880s villagers decided the small community could only support one church and agreed the one who had the most members at a meeting would be the one to survive.

When the count included one more Episcopalian than Baptist, they named the new church St. John the Baptist because the Baptists came so close in the count. For a number of years, the church went by the name of St. John's Episcopal but returned to its original name in 1999 when all the churches in the diocese incorporated.
