The Southern California Genealogical Society exists to foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques.

The Southern California Genealogical Society, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit society, celebrated its 50th Anniversary on January 10th, 2014. Its headquarters, which houses a 40,000-volume Family Research Library, is located in Burbank, California.

The Society's growing online presence, including a webinar archive and a growing inventory of proprietary digital genealogical data, is housed at www.scgsgenealogy.com. One of the major goals of SCGS is to release a significant online database, including extensive records from the 1980 Project to reconstruct the 1890 U.S. Census for Los Angeles County, which was lost to fire.

Through its programs, members are offered the opportunity to network with other family historians through special interest groups, SCGS projects, educational offerings, and special events. The Society business office houses a Family Research Library with over 40,000 volumes including 6,000 family histories. Research resources also include manuscripts, microforms, maps, periodicals and electronic data resources for use by its members and the general public. Library holdings include materials from every state and many countries, with emphasis on Germany, French Canadian, Cornwall, and other special collections.

The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, in its 47th year, is a very popular event and is among the top family history conferences in the United States.  Sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society, Jamboree is typically held the first full weekend of June. The 2016 Jamboree will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Hotel on Friday through Sunday, June 3th through 5th.
