History
South Anna Elementary School opened its doors to the students from Rockville, Montpelier and Bethany Elementary Schools in 1983. South Anna is located in the western-most part of the division and is one of 14 elementary schools that comprise Hanover County Public Schools. The school serves over 700 students, Kindergarten through Fifth grade. The staff consists of 51 full-time teachers, 4 part-time teachers, 20 instructional aides, 1 school nurse, 4 custodians, 16 bus drivers, 6 cafeteria workers, 3 cafeteria monitors, 2 secretaries, 1 full time and 1 part time guidance counselors, 1 assistant principal and 1 principal. Among these positions, a Reading Resource teacher, a Gifted Resource teacher and 12 Special Education teachers provide special services.

South Anna is well equipped with technology. All homeroom classes have 5 networked computers and resource classes are also networked. The library circulation is fully automated. The school network has Accelerated Reader, math, language arts, social studies, science and reference programs.

The school has an active and supportive PTA, which supports school efforts, by contributing large amounts of volunteer time and funding. Some examples of PTA support are: Literary Magazine, school newspaper, landscaping, special activities throughout the school, School Improvement projects, supplies for teachers, volunteers, tutoring, ice cream socials for new students, appreciation activities for teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and custodians and many more activities not listed here.

South Anna Elementary School and the surrounding community are rapidly growing. Our student population hails from diverse backgrounds. This area of Hanover has historically been a farming community; however, families new to the community are choosing to live in subdivisions in increasing numbers.

Great pride is taken in meeting the varying needs of all students at South Anna. The Department of Education in 1991-1992 and 1993-1994 recognized South Anna twice as a Blue Ribbon School. We were again recognized in October of 2000 by the Blue Ribbon Committee and our application was sent on to Washington, D.C. for consideration as National Blue Ribbon School. South Anna Elementary School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School in the Spring of 2001.
