Welcome to Smyrna Elementary School. We welcome your interest in our school and share this information with pride. The school population is diverse with students from a variety of socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Our experienced and dedicated staff strives to meet the educational and social needs of our students in traditional and innovative classroom settings. The Gifted and Talented Program strives to meet the needs of all students in the school with a variety of delivery strategies ranging from whole-class instruction to pull-out learning experiences. Special Education and Title I serve students in inclusion and small group pull settings who need additional academic support. The Kindergarten program is a full-day program. The related arts program includes music, art, physical education, and library and is offered to all students grades Kindergarten through four. A computer lab is available for whole group and small group instruction, technology instruction, research, and assessment. Parent involvement is highly valued and strongly emphasized. Our PTO meets regularly and supports fundraising and community-building events.

Mission
The mission of Smyrna Elementary is to establish and maintain a positive and motivational school climate for learning that will promote increase of achievement and responsibility. The school climate will provide for individual abilities and age-appropriate practices, while encouraging student independence and cooperation through varied programs and educational experiences. It will encourage the involvement of all parents and community in a partnership to foster the success of our students as contributing members of society.

Goals
The administration and staff at SES continue to align our curriculum to the state standards, and we have created a seamless transition among the grade levels. This school year marked the 6th year for our Growing with Mathematics math series. Other programs that have been fully implemented are the Four Blocks Literacy Model and 6+1 Traits of Writing Model, RSS and SOAR strategies are implemented in the classrooms to help the students become better readers and writers. The integration of technology into the curriculum to supplement instruction includes Breakthrough to Literacy, Accelerated Math, Accelerated Reader, Math Facts in a Flash, and English in a Flash computer programs. DIBELS, a reading fluency assessment administered to students in grades K-2, and a standards-based assessment administered to students in grades 3-4 are given 3 times a year to benchmark our students’ growth.
