About Us

In1976, the year our country celebrated its bicentennial, STS was given life. Happiness is Shandaken was the first play produced by a small group of Shandaken residents and was performed at the Methodist Church in Pine Hill on April 9 - 11, 1976. The play’s great success, encouraged the participants to form the Shandaken Theatrical Society. Seven months later, on November 23, 1976, their dreams became a reality.

For years STS operated in a variety of places and it was difficult putting on shows without a permanent home or place to keep costumes, sets, etc., all the various things needed when preparing a production. So when the Phoenicia Theatre became available to rent the member jumped at the opportunity.

The building was built in 1887 by the International Order of Odd Fellows for their meetings and recreational activities. The sign is still on the peak of the building. Over the years the building has housed, among many things, an auction barn and a movie theatre.

In February 1998, with the help of many friends and supporters, STS purchased the building. We are tremendously pleased with the accomplishment. We feel a sense of pride in saving an old building and giving it new life. Most of all, having a permanent “home” means we can continue to encourage and enrich the performing arts in our community.
