About Us :

Savage Volunteer Fire Company is one of a few fire departments controlled by its members. Many of the surround departments are controlled by the county. Being member controlled, Savage elects representatives to handle the administrative and operational aspects of the company. These are the Administrative and Operational Officers. These elected men and women deal with the day to day issues from funding to member training.

Support comes from the county in the form of career personnel and additional emergency equipment. The county placed two engines, a paramedic unit, brush truck, and utility to be manned 24 hours a day. Career personnel are county employees assigned to the station to man the equipment for a 24 hour period. The benefits are that for every 24 hours on duty, they have 48 hours off. There are 21 career personnel assigned to the station. They are divided into three shifts (A through C). These shift last from 7am to 7am the next morning.

The Savage volunteers support their families in full time jobs, then start their second job of protecting the community. To better the member's coverage for the entire week, the Duty Crew program is used. On average, the duty crew starts at 1900hrs and continues until 2300hrs, or an agreed consecutive 4 hour block. In that block of time, members are to perform routine house duties, training, equipment checks, and respond to emergency calls. Although you can come on any day or night, members are assigned to an specific night.

Sometimes it can be long exhaustive work, but the satisfaction you feel knowing you've helped someone is something you can't put in a pay check. Of course, getting a paycheck for doing something you love is always a bonus.
