History:

In 1978 and early 1979 the economy of Riverton and the surrounding area was strong and vibrant. This was due to extensive exploration and drilling for oil and natural gas and the operation of the largest open pit uranium mines in the United States just south of Riverton in the Gas Hills mining district. The community was growing in population and was completing new buildings at Central Wyoming College, a new library, and a new Riverton High School complex. Times were good, and business activity was high.

The Riverton Lions Club met on Monday evenings and had so many members it was thinking of starting a second club that would meet early in the morning. One Lion's Club member, Dennis Tippets, who later became a state legislator, mayor of Riverton and assistant Rotary District Governor, had been a "Junior Rotarian" while attending High School in Laramie Wyoming. He had enjoyed the Rotary experience and often thought that a growing community like Riverton should have a Rotary Club. He believed a Rotary Club would complement the Lions and Kiwanis clubs who were the other major service clubs in this small Wyoming City of ten thousand population.
