Rotary Club of East Windsor

History

In early 1969, two South Windsor Rotarians, Sherwood Waldron and Roy Browning suggested to their club that they sponsor the start up of a club in East Windsor. At the time, a few residents of East Windsor were members of both the Windsor Locks and South Windsor clubs. Sherwood and Roy got together with Ralph Winn and Jack Bassinger and formed a committee to start the club in East Windsor. The original committee members were as follows:

Ralph Winn
Jack Bassinger
Francis Revay
Sam Breslau
Lenny Mulnite

The committees' first task, along with Sherwood Waldron and Roy Browning's guidance was to find probable members. This was done by matching prospective members with a classification. Classification meaning Doctor, Lawyer, Banker, etc. These men had to be in a management position or be a business owner. Meetings were held weekly at 7:30 A.M. at our local bank. In three months, we had thirty-two interested people who thought that becoming a Rotarian would be both an honor and a great experience.

Sherwood and Roy had to correspond with Rotary International in Evanston in order to complete all of the necessary paperwork required to form a new club. Now that we had thirty-two members and were an official Club, we decided Thursday nights 6:30 to 8:30 would be our meeting time at Pasquales Restaurant. Rotary International rules required our club to be under probation for six months before receiving our Charter.

The following charter members were elected as our first officers:

President - Ralph Winn
Vice President - Maurice Bourquin
Secretary - Lenny Mulnite
Treasurer - Frank Maffee

We became part of Rotary District 789, which consisted of Clubs from North Central Connecticut and Western Mass., approximately forty-five clubs. After our six month probation, we were chartered on April 1970 and East Windsor Rotary was born!
