Our History

In January of 1996, a group met to worship together. These 89 people first met in a recreational building, but their love of God and each other developed into a dedicated ministry. While they improvised to organize Sunday School classes in neighboring homes, and even in a van in the parking lot, as well as setting up a tent to serve as a nursery area; they were solidifying their commitment to God and each other. Within their first week, they were sponsored by an established church, and in their second week; they adopted the name "Nash Baptist Mission". Things moved quickly as the group voted in February 1996 to purchase land in order to build a new church. By March, the group became "Rock Creek Baptist Church", with David Pope and Sylvia Sutter as its leaders. On April 23, 1996, Rock Creek established its covenant and began to receive members. In December 1997, the group began meeting in its new multipurpose building north of Nashville.  David retired in 2006 and Dr. Bill Wakefield served as interim pastor for over two years.  David now serves as pastor emeritus.  In July 2008, Blake Dempsey was called as pastor.  Rev. Sutter retired in fall 2010 after fourteen plus years of devoted service as Minister of Music and Church Administrator.  David and Linda McCray currently serve as Interim Music Directors.

While many would describe Rock Creek as unconventional, the members are proud of the flexibility they have developed over the course of the years. The church has grown; not only in numbers, but in its mission. A variety of activities encourage participation of all ages in the church programs. Rock Creek brought Upward Basketball to Nashville, and missions programs reach out to neighbors near and far. A thriving music program involves all who are willing to sing, from pre-schoolers to senior adults. The annual presentation of the Living Christmas scenes continues to inspire the community to reflect on the miracle of Christ's birth. Youth programs encourage teens to strengthen their relationship with God and the church, while enjoying fun times and travels with one another. Family Night meals on Wednesday evenings are a core component of the spirit of fellowship one experiences at Rock Creek.

We eagerly seek God's will in our lives and the life of our church. Come by and visit one Sunday morning, or have dinner with us one Wednesday evening. You will find friends and a place to call your own.
