Optimist Club Of Des Plaines

PO Box 1551
847-827-1444

About Us:

Our club was first chartered in November of 1954.Woody Weaver, a member of the Austin Optimists in Chicago was our sponsor. He gathered together men he knew, and those who were referred to him, to organize the Optimist Club of Des Plaines. There were twenty-five members in that first club and our first president was Dwight Byram. He was followed by a succession of strong presidents who brought about instant recognition of the Optimist Club in the community of Des Plaines, IL.

The Optimist Club of Des Plaines is a service club. Its original slogan, "Friend of the Boy," was changed to "Friend of Youth." Our activities have included the Oratorical, of which we have had three winners in our district contest, sponsorship of Little League, Boy and Girl Scouts, and numerous school groups. We also offer a Fishing Derby, Kite Fly, and a Junior Golf Tournament. We are continuing to grow in membership and have added many new programs to those traditional ones we have sponsored for many years. In particular, we have joined with other clubs in our international organization to fight Childhood Cancer.
