Mount Pisgah Baptist Church

2140 McBee Highway
803-475-7145

Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church was organized in 1837. For the first ten years the church used a school house for its place of worship. In 1847 a church building was erected. It was forty feet wide and sixty feet long.

Forty-seven years later, in 1894, another building was erected on the same lot. It was contracted for $176.00. This building was remodeled in 1915 and two wings were added; one on each side.

In 1928 the present building was erected. The lot was given by John and Charlie Holley. The work was done by free labor except that which was done by F .M. Arthur as part-time architect and foreman. The material for this building, except for the mill-work for the brick work, was furnished and manufactured by the community. The value of the building was variously estimated at thirty to forty thousand dollars.

The membership was composed of both white and colored people in its early history. In 1850 there were one hundred and forty-four white and ten colored members.

Our forefathers had great foresight in the planning and construction of this building. It continued to serve the needs of its people until 2004 when construction of a new fellowship hall with additional classrooms and offices was undertaken.
