About Us:

Mossy Creek United Methodist Church was established as the Mossy Creek Meeting House in 1821. It is probably the oldest Methodist congregation (and possibly oldest congregation), located in White County, Georgia. The first congregational building was constructed of hewn logs and located near the present location of the church (property of Mr. Clement Quillian).

A few years later, in 1826, Mr. Quillian deeded to the Trustees approximately eleven acres for a recited considerations of six and one-fourth cents. This area included the meeting house, a spring and the church burial grounds. The old log church was used by the congregation until the late 1870's.

In 1878, the congregation completed a new frame church structure which was located just across the road from the original log sanctuary. The Mossy Creek community was a well populated and thriving area of farms located along the main route between Gainesville, Mount Yonah (later known as Cleveland) and the Nacoochee Valley. After the disruptions of the Civil War had passed, the congregation and the community took great interest education. As a consequence, the Mossy Creek academy, also known as the

Mossy Creek High School, was established as a boarding school on the church's property in 1889. The school continued to operate for about 30 years. By the end of World War II, the congregation had grown to the point where a new sanctuary was needed - and this new brick sanctuary was completed in 1947. It is still the sanctuary in use today.

In 1961, the congregation constructed a brick parsonage on the church grounds that serves as a home for the pastors. As the church grew, a large brick activity hall was constructed in 1974. In the 1980's new Sunday school rooms, offices and and expanded sanctuary were added.
