Logan County Chamber of Commerce
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce was established in June 1913. Today's Chamber consists of approximately 200 area business and professional firms committed to bettering Logan County. The Logan County Chamber of Commerce is an organization of business people working together to improve the quality of life and the business climate in the Logan County area. It has been termed "the VOICE of Logan County." The Chamber is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of eighteen members. These members serve on various committees including: industry and business development, legislative, membership, coal and related industry, roads, annual chamber dinner and the arts and crafts fair. Debrina Williams is the managing director for the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Officers of the Chamber are Glenn Yost, president, Greg Wooten Vice President, and Chad Akers, treasurer. Kellie Christian serves as the executive secretary.
The Chamber works to attract new business to our communities, while retaining existing businesses and industries and helping them to expand. Membership in the Logan County Chamber of Commerce opens the door to many exciting functions. Whether business, educational or social in nature, the activities provide Chamber members with opportunities to meet new clients or customers for their firm's goods or services.
Each month the Chamber publishes a newsletter as well as a community calendar of events. A Logan County profile packet containing a community overview has been designed for prospective residents and businesses. It is available upon request. Community groups are encouraged to call or write the Chamber with dates of their events and meetings.
The activities of the Chamber are numerous. 2006 will mark the 25th Annual High School Business Symposium. The symposium assists high school students with information about the free enterprise System as it exists today. Business leaders serve as group discussion leaders. The Small Business Development Center of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College offers free business consultation at the Logan County Chamber of Commerce each month. These workshops assist individuals with problem solving, business start up, business plans, strategic development, planning and small business training.
Business After Hours offers an opportunity for business people to meet and network with others in the business area and is sponsored by various businesses each month.
2006 will mark the 34th Annual Logan County Arts, Crafts, and Antiques Festival. This event will be held on August 11-13, 2006 at the Logan Memorial Field House. The fair hosts local crafters as well as vendors from out of town. Crafters display unique handmade art and craft items and no retail merchandise is sold. The fair provides shoppers with the opportunity to find unusual gifts for very special occasions. This year's fair hosted several new craft booths as well as many favorites returning. In addition to great food, and unique crafts, local entertainment graced the stage throughout the fair, as well as a baking contest, talent show, tennis tournament, and beauty pageant. The county's local history, culture and heritage were on display throughout the weekend.
The Chamber plays an active role in the Junior Achievement program, Southern Partners for Education and Economic Development, Workforce Investment, as well as the Family Resource Network. In the fall season, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce will host their annual dinner. In the past they have sponsored outstanding speakers including Willard Scott, The Capitol Steps, Governor Cecil Underwood, Congressman Bob Wise and Gary Racan and the Studio e band. The Chamber additionally sponsors a Logan County Belle each year who represents the county at the West Virginia State Folk Festival.
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce opened their office located on 214 Stratton Street, Logan, West Virginia in April 2001. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on June 5, 2001 in celebration of the renovated office that will serve both the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and the Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation, Inc. The building was named the Becker Building in honor of Bill and Martha Jane Becker.
