King Memorial United Methodist Church

502 North Colorado Street
254-694-2599

The Whitney Methodist Episcopal Church South was organized in 1875 at Pecan Grove. Several pastors served as circuit riders from 1875 until 1880. In 1880, the church was moved to Whitney, which became a town site in 1879, and the first Methodist church was built.

In 1901 the present church building was built, taking the name of King Memorial in honor of a beloved member, Mr. N.J. King, a local land owner. By 1940 the membership had grown to 219 members and 120 in church school.

In 1953 the old parsonage was remodeled, in 1964 the educational wing was added, and in 1979 a new brick four bedroom parsonage was built three blocks west of the church at 601 North Guadalupe Street. The lots where the old parsonage stood were used for parking space, fellowship hall, and a thrift store.

An entire re-modeling was done to the interior and the exterior of the church in 1974 with new metal siding added to the exterior of the building to preserve and protect this beautiful structure of the original old church. Many lovely paintings and snapshots have been made of this charming old building.

By 1984, our Bicentennial year, our membership had grown to 352 members, many of them from the Lake Whitney area.

By 1993, we had outgrown our Sunday School space both in adult, youth, and children's classes. At the beginning of 1994, the annex across the street was constructed to house the Thrift Store. This new building allowed us to gain more classroom space for the Sunday School groups and a meeting place for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, both of which we have chartered since their inception.

Our Nursing Home Ministry is very active and our children, youth, and adults regularly schedule worship services and days of song for the enjoyment and fellowship with our beloved elderly in the Whitney Community.

Our youth and children are active in the ministry of the church. They take field trips, go to special interest events, hold fund raisers when there is a need, exercise civic responsibility in Adopt-A-Nursing Home and Adopt-A-Highway Trash Off, Sponsor fun events for themselves and friends and in a general share the Spirit of Christ in prayer and play.

The music program includes the beauty of the Rattan Hand Bell Choir, the weekly music and seasonal cantatas from the adult chancel choir along with our many talented vocalists featuring both traditional and contemporary music, and the children's choir, The King's Kids which ministers with their music throughout the year.
