Kindred Ground Farm

Our CSA weekly baskets are full of delicious, freshly harvested, locally grown vegetables, herbs and flowers and sometimes a few nice additions. Last year (2010) we enjoyed some wild blackberries from around the old corn crib, little apples from one of our trees, walnuts from one of our neighbors, and corn stalks from our dairy farm for Harvest decorations. New this year: edible flowers and lots more cut flowers from Granny's Garden here at Kindred Ground Farm.2011 will also find us planting many brambles (raspberries and blackberries), blueberries and fruit and nut trees. Our seed order this year included sweet potato slips, dry beans - red kidney, calypso and black beans, hot peppers, edamame (soybeans), a large selection of gourds, blue hubbard squash, several different varieties of basil, parsnips, purple peppers, golden beets, white and purple kohlrabi to name just a few. We'll have the veggies we're all used to and we'll be adding in some new ones to expand our taste bud horizons.

Plan on the weekly baskets starting in late June and going through the season into late October, for approximately 20 weeks. We grow our produce on approximately two acres of farmland and have a commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity. The majority of our purchased seeds are organic or untreated. We make and use our own compost. We use straw and biodegradable paper mulch. No synthetic pesticides or herbicides are used on our farm. Companion planting and crop rotation are part of the planning process. Scheduled for this season: rain barrels and drip irrigation! We offer a couple of different share options for our members: 1) A Full Share which will generally provide weekly produce for up to four people with an average of 7 - 11different items and... 2) A Half Share which will have 4 - 7 items and will generally provide for two adults.

Fuller shares are anticipated in the summer months when the harvest is traditionally plentiful, with lighter shares in the Spring and Fall seasons. Here's another something unique about us: Our Members have choices in their weekly share baskets! How does that work? Each week the Farmer will choose the core items for the weekly baskets. i.e. a week in July each basket receives green beans, sweet peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers.

Then, our shareholders may choose(!) among the remaining produce options that week to round our their their weekly baskets. A Full Share may choose up to 7 different items and a Half Share may choose up to 3 more different items from whatever else is available that week, i.e. eggplant, yellow beans, summer squash, beets, hot peppers, basil, parsley, lemon balm, cherry tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, edible flowers, cut flowers, spearmint, mixed greens, etc.Don't care for one of the core items? Pass it on to friends, families, neighbors or co-workers. Or you can leave that item and we'll pass it on. We understand that lives are filled with obligations and free time can be in short supply sometimes, so we don't require a work commitment from our members. Though if you love to dig in the dirt and commune with nature, we'd love a pair of extra hands and the pleasure of your company. Whatever time you are able to volunteer at the farm will always be greatly appreciated.

There are always plenty of chores to do around the farm and as my mom always says, "many hands make light work."We'll have two Kindred Ground Farm Fun Days this year: one in the early Summer and the other one in the Fall. Food, fun, and friends - old and new! Kindred Ground Farm is all about people and the land. We are dedicated to family, friends-old and new, to the community and to being good stewards of the land. We use sustainable and responsible practices in growing our vegetables and herbs and this year - cut flowers! Our vegetables, herbs and flowers are naturally grown and will always be synthetic pesticide- and herbicide-free.

We welcome and encourage our shareholders and their families to visit the farm, to get to know the farmer, the family and the land. Bring the children so they can check out the Pizza Garden and a new Flower Garden - just for them! Come spend time in the gardens and enjoy Mother Nature working her magic!
