Joseph F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center

921 W. Lincoln Hwy
815-756-7904

Joseph F. Glidden's invention of one of the most widely-used types of barbed wire in 1873, helped change the history of the American West and had far-reaching impact throughout the world. Glidden invented "The Winner" (patented 1874) at the DeKalb, IL, home he built in the 1860s. In the mid-1990s, a non-profit organization known as the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center was founded to restore and preserve the Homestead's buildings.
Much work has been completed, but fund-raising efforts are underway to complete an ambitious plan to establish a living-history museum at the site. Both the house and barn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Your interest and involvement are welcome!
