Jackson United Methodist Church

409 East Third Street
770-775-7238

The Jackson United Methodist Church has sturdy, strong roots, serving our risen Lord in Butts County. From its humble beginnings in a log cabin in the early part of the 19th century, it has been a permanent institution in this community.

The first worship services were believed to have been held in the fall of 1818, conducted by various ministers serving Jackson as mission appointments. When the city of Jackson became incorporated, the church was called Jackson Methodist Church.

The present location was acquired by the Trustees on October 19, 1845, for the sum of $40.00 and has served as the site of three Methodist Churches, including the present structure.

The first church was built in 1846 for about $1,000.00. A second, larger structure was completed in 1884 for approximately $10,000.00 and served until around 1923. The bell which first occupied the belfry of this second church is still in use today. It bears the date 1859. The present building and adjacent parsonage were completed and dedicated to serving God in 1924, and a pipe organ was installed in 1949.

In 1974 a major renovation of the exterior, the sanctuary, and the fellowship hall was completed. In 1979 a new parsonage was built on Briarcliff Road.

A new wing was added to the church and the educational wing was renovated in 1986, which includes a library, a chapel with memorial windows, and the church offices.

In 2001 the church consecrated its newest addition- the multipurpose gym & fellowship hall, built for expanded worship, recreation, dining and fellowship.

Our past is a great one, but the future holds an even greater promise for exciting ministry. Our's is a "seven days a week" church, with a full schedule of worship, study and fellowship activities.
