About Us:

The mission of Highline Public Schools is educate every student and expect excellence. Everything we do is focused on the ultimate goal of seeing each and every student graduate ready for college, career and citizenship.

District wide, we have a strong focus on literacy and mathematics. For the past several years, Highline has concentrated significant resources on an aggressive literacy initiative. The literacy program includes individualized assessment for each student, and the use of reading specialists working directly with children and reading coaches who work with teachers to structure classroom instruction to meet the needs of the diverse student population. We are providing extensive professional development for teachers in order to improve instruction and giving struggling students extended opportunities for instruction after school and during the school day. Starting in the fall of 2006, we are applying many of the same strategies to improve student achievement in math.

Academically, our 17,000+ students continue to improve as we learn better ways to reach and teach all our students. The students of Highline have consistently scored above the national average on the SAT test. In the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), Highline students are improving their scores each year.

We are convinced that in order to succeed in today's world, every student must pursue some form of "college" be it an apprenticeship, vocational/technical training, community college or four year university and beyond. Our high school program aims to prepare every student for further learning after high school. We believe our students need a more personalized approach to learning than is provided in a traditional comprehensive high school, so students in all our high schools are grouped in small learning communities. These small learning communities take different forms at each of our high schools. The work of redesigning our high schools has been supported in part the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition to the high schools serving our four geographic service areas, Highline also has the only aviation themed college prep high school in the nation. Aviation High School is operated in partnership with King County and many aviation industry partners.

Highline students have the advantage of living and learning in a community with rich cultural diversity. Our students represent about 80 nationalities and speak 70 different languages. Because our schools reflect the diversity our students will face in the workplace of tomorrow, our students will be well prepared to live and work in the global economy and multicultural world of the future.

Schools need the support of the community and parents in order to educate students well. We invite you to partner with us as we educate every student and expect excellence.
