Highland Center

P.O. Box 556
540-468-1922

History:

The Highland Center was incorporated as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization in January 1998. It acquired the former Highland Elementary School building from the county government in that year. The building, which is currently being listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, was built in 1922 as the Monterey High School. It is of neoclassical design with a native stone masonry exterior, multi-level hipped roofs, and large double-hung windows. The Highland Center's goals can be divided into two broad categories: those related to restoring and utilizing the old school building and those related to building the cultural, economic, educational, and recreational capacity of the community. In this sense, The Highland Center aspires to become a true center of its community, providing not only a place where people come to interact but also a vehicle for shepherding the resources a community needs to be successful.
