History

Haskell County was organized in 1887 and was originally named "Arapahoe" for a tribe of high plains Indians. After it was organized, it was renamed for Dudley C Haskell. The Santa Fe Trail crosses Haskell County from the northeast corner to the southwest side. This trail was from St. Louis, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The city of Satanta was named for a Kiowa Indian Chief, Satanta. The city of Sublette was named for a fur trapper, William Sublette.
