About Us:

A tongue-in-cheek story making the rounds in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) circles says that the pope, when advised of the start of talks between the Disciples and the Vatican, asked in puzzlement: "The Apostles I know, but who are these Disciples?" A frequently asked question, many people find themselves wondering the same thing.
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a part of "mainstream Protestantism," a designation which includes churches like the United Methodists, the Presbyterians, the Episcopal Church, and the United Church of Christ. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) traces its roots back to the American frontier, when Presbyterian ministers Thomas and Alexander Campbell, and Barton Stone, set out to restore unity to the church based on simple New Testament practices. Weekly communion open to all believers, freedom in interpreting Scripture, and a call to Christian unity became hallmarks of the early Disciples, and they remain hallmarks today.

Contemporary Disciples find themselves strongly committed to ministries of unity and reconciliation. People in Disciple congregations believe that it is more important that we see together than we see alike. Diversity and freedom of opinion, a seeking spirit, the asking of questions are all encouraged within the Disciple circles, undergirded by a confession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and a commitment to the caring fellowship of his church.

Gordon Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is one of the nearly 4,000 Disciple congregations in the United States and Canada. It has a rich history of ministry in the Kinston, North Carolina area, dating back to 1843. Its traditional worship life and ministries of Christian nurture are balanced by a strong commitment to outreach and benevolence.
