Our Blaine Unitarian church was founded in 1928 by a group of 26 theologically Unitarian Icelanders, led by Rev. Halldor Johnson as the Free Church Congregation (in Icelandic, Frikirkjusofnudur) The first organizational meeting was held in a chick hatchery!

The Free Church Unitarian building opened for worship May 26, 1929 with a morning Icelandic service by Rev. Johnson and an evening English service by Rev. A. Kristjannson. Fine music has always been a Free Church tradition. Our Choir was honored to open the 1995 Unitarian Universalist General Assembly.

Free Church Unitarian has an especially warm atmosphere where old and young mingle as family. Our membership has families, couples, and singles as active members.

Our Purpose

It is the purpose of this congregation to help make truth and love the governing force in the hearts of all people; to encourage freedom and open-mindedness in religious thinking; to cultivate the inner spiritual life that it may grow in harmony with the universe.
