First United Methodist Church

102 West Liberty Street

About Us :

This local church is an outgrowth of the first Methodist congregation in Georgia, Grant's meeting house built in 1787 southeast of Washington. In 1821, the site of the present Masonic building, was purchased for a new building. In 1834, during an annual conference held here the first movement to build Emory College was started. In 1882 the brick church (now the Masonic Lodge) was built. In 1910 the church moved to its present location. In the early 1950's the church added an education facility and soon after a beautiful chapel was added. In the 1990's Bell Cottage was purchased and served as a youth house and provided land for expansion. Now the church is preparing to add a new fellowship hall to our facilities to address our need for additional space and position us for future growth and greater ministry opportunities.
