First Christian Church

1501 South Main Street
660-663-3415

The denomination known as Disciples of Christ (DOC) was born out of a revival held in Cane Ridge, Kentucky in the summer of 1801. The religious movement spread cross the frontier like wildfire. When this movement was only 42 years old, our church here in Gallatin, Missouri was born.

First Christian Church (FCC) was organized on June 17, 1843 with 41 charter members. The congregation met in the Daviess County courthouse until state militia took control of the courthouse in 1861 (during the Civil War).

After the war, FCC started worshipping in a consistent location with 23 members and in 1867 they completed their first building at a cost of $4,000. This building was their home until January 1899, when a new sanctuary was dedicated (photo left). Around 1913, the men of the congregation dug a basement beneath the sanctuary and the ladies raised money to add a fellowship hall and kitchen in this new space. In addition to the sanctuary, the congregation built a Christian education/office building in 1963, and a new fellowship hall was completed in 1995 (bottom left photo).

Today, First Christian Church has moved all our services to our fellowship hall, which has been transformed into a transitional worship center. Offices are now located at this location, 1501 South Main Street, Gallatin, MO.
