HISTORY

1925-1987

Boyle Heights, California

Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley is an offshoot of Evergreen Baptist Church of Los Angeles, which was founded in 1925 as a mission work to the English-speaking, Japanese-Americans in Boyle Heights, California  at a time when the area was predominantly Japanese.  Over the years, at the corner of Evergreen Ave. and E. 2nd St., the once largely Japanese congregation blossomed into a vibrant and growing Asian-American church.

1987-1997

Rosemead, California

By the late-1980’s, the church had outgrown its building, and, in order to better reach the English-speaking, Asian American population, relocated to Rosemead, California.  In a matter of years, the church flourished to the degree that it was, once again, pressing the limits of the church building.  And so, in order to continue to meet the needs of the members and still reach out to the larger San Gabriel Valley, a decision was made to "hive" one large church into two smaller churches. Evergreen Baptist Church of Los Angeles remained at the Rosemead site, and in 1997, a portion of the congregation left to begin a new work.

1997-2007

Whittier, California – Rio Hondo College

In the spring of 1997, this new work, Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley, held its first worship service in the cafeteria of Rio Hondo Community College (Whittier, California). Over the next ten years, the church ministered faithfully at this “temporary” site, always with an “eye” for a permanent church home in the vicinity of the junction of the 605 and 60 freeways.

2007-PRESENT

La Puente, California

Praise be to God that in the spring of 2007, Evergreen SGV was blessed to acquire its current facilities here at 323 Workman Mill Road in La Puente, California. Through a series of events deemed nothing but miraculous and God-ordained, the church was able to purchase, renovate, and commence worship services in our new church home in August of 2007. We give all praise and glory to God for His hand of faithfulness and goodness so evidently upon this church family throughout the years.
