Congregationalism (that form of church government in which each local church is self-governing) had its birth in England in the sixteenth century and came to these shores with the Pilgrims and Puritans who settled Massachusetts Bay Colony.


Back in the 1860's, Essex Junction was a small but growing railroad village. Seeking to recover from the Civil War and to meet the spiritual needs of the community, a group of folk from Congregational and Methodist backgrounds banded together to create the Essex Junction Union Church Association. Land was donated for the church, and by February of 1867, the building was far enough along that worship services were held in the vestry. The present sanctuary and vestry portion of our facilities was finished in October 1869. Later additions were made in 1914 and 1961.
