History:

Elm Street School is a Coweta County public elementary school, housing pre-kindergarten through grade five, located in Newnan, Georgia, a rapidly-growing suburban community thirty miles southwest of Atlanta. Even as the county is experiencing the emerging anonymity of a large metropolitan area, Elm Street School maintains the characteristics of a small-town neighborhood school. Located on a quiet street in one of Newnan's most prestigious residential areas, the school is within walking distance of the Court House Square in historic downtown Newnan. A strong sense of community pride permeates both the neighborhood and the school. Residents view the beautifully landscaped campus as a natural complement to their well-maintained neighborhood.

The school opened in 1956 as an elementary school housing grades one through six. In 1973, it became a primary school for kindergarten through grade three. In 1988, the school adjusted to the kindergarten through fifth grade structure in accordance with regulations in the Georgia Quality Basic Education Act. Pre-Kindergarten was added in 1994. The school's population is one of social and economic extremes.

There has always been a strong partnership among school, home, and community. In recent years, our system-wide business partner, Newnan Utilities, has worked with our teachers, PTO, school business partners and technical support staff to achieve the goal of infusing technology into the curriculum. In 1995, Elm Street School was awarded a Next Generation School grant. This provided the seed money, and Newnan Water & Light provided fiber-optic cable and state-of-the-art technology. With hard work from our technical support staff and help from parents and others in the community, a wide-area network was created that provided Elm Street School with direct access to the Internet and email. Classrooms contain at least two computers with Internet access. Elm Street also has 28 iMac computers which are available to all students and teachers. Elm Street is one of Coweta County's InTech Training Sites. Teachers from throughout the county have the opportunity to train with the state of the art technology.
