Covenant Baptist Church

528 Main Street
609-267-9424

History:

Covenant began in 1983 as a Bible study in Marlton, NJ. A Reformed and Baptist church with solid Scriptural foundations was desired and earnestly pursued by committed families. God blessed these desires and Covenant Baptist Church was constituted on December 8, 1985, in the Moorestown Friends School, our first meeting place. John Reuther was ordained at that time as the first Pastor.

The Early Days

The early days at Covenant were filled with excitement and anticipation. A real hunger for God and a great desire to be faithful to the word of God led a dozen or so families to meet regularly on Friday nights for Bible study. Realizing their mutual commitment to honoring and trusting God to build a Reformed and Baptist Church in this area, they structured their Bible Study as a church service. They sang hymns, prayed, and studied the Bible together. They called themselves Covenant Baptist Fellowship. After a year passed by they began to look for a Pastor. One of the families in the fellowship previously attended a Reformed Baptist church in West Chester, PA, where John & Wendy Reuther were members. It was through this contact that the fellowship asked John to come and begin preaching weekly. After a few months of ministry, the church called John to be the pastor and the Reuther family moved to Burlington County where they have been ever since. God blessed the ministry of His word and the church began to grow. We met at the Moorestown Friends School in the basement for a couple of years. It was nothing fancy, and not easy to find, but those who came were hungry for God’s word and the place of meeting did not matter. Pastor Reuther began looking for a more suitable building for the church and God wonderfully provided us with the historic church on Main St. in Lumberton. It took us three years to purchase and renovate the building, but God led us all the way and we began a new phase of our church life together in the building which we dedicated to God’s glory and the good of His people on July 17, 1993.
