City of White Oak
Our History
White Oak was born in 1884, when a dozen families moved into the piney woods of East Texas to farm and work at the local saw mills. Deciding they needed a school for their children, these settlers built a 60' X 40' building which served as a school and church building. Upon completion of the building, foreman John Bumpus declared the place should be called "White Oak", due to the two beautiful White Oak trees growing at the front corners of the newly constructed building. White Oak became an incorporated city in 1957, and adopted a Home Rule Charter in 1994.
Today, White Oak is a small community of about 5,624 people. Bordering Longview, Texas (pop. 75,000), our advantageous location offers the culture, recreational activities, and conveniences of a larger city, but without the big city hassles. Our schools, parks, and safe neighborhoods provide White Oak residents a higher quality of life. White Oak truly is a "City of Pride & Tradition".
