About Us

The City of Mt. Angel is centrally located in the Willamette Valley, just 15 miles northeast of Oregon's State Capital Salem. With a Bavarian feel and proclaimed the Sister City of Engelberg, Switzerland in May 2002, Mt. Angel proves to be a great place to visit and live. Mt. Angel's Bavarian history dates back over 100 years ago.

From 1850 through 1882, Benjamin Cleaver settled in the area establishing a school district, railroad station, church, and post office in the town know then as Frankfort. The Benedictine Monks arrived from Engelberg, Switzerland in October 1882 and established the Mount Angel Abbey.

On April 3, 1893 Mt. Angel became an incorporated town with 25 legal voters in town.

The 23rd legislature incorporated Mt. Angel as a city in 1905 and Fred Schwab became the first Mayor. A city system was installed and a Fire department organized that year.

As of December 2003, the estimated population is approximately 3,700. The City's current tax rate is 4.1918 per $1,000 of assessed value. The taxes support City Administration, 24 hour Police coverage, Library, Municipal Court and Parks. Gas taxes support streets; the water and sewer systems are supported by the revenues received from utility bills.
