Burlington's original inhabitants lived in tents one mile west of the present day city limits. Shortly after the Rock Island Railroad decided that their line would run through Burlington the town was moved to it's current location. Burlington was incorporated in May 1888 and was voted the county seat of the newly formed Kit Carson County shortly thereafter. In the mid 1900s the Rock Island Railroad Company was dissolved and today Burlington's economy is based on agriculture
