Use your passion, skills and knowledge to transform the educational landscape in NYC.

What is Citizen Schools?

Citizen Schools is an education nonprofit that partners with public middle schools in underserved New York City communities to expand the learning day. We do this by providing hands-on and relevant lessons for students they may not experience during regular school hours.

What is Citizen Schools' mission?

Our mission is to engage young people with real-world opportunities in their learning experience and make sure they are supported and motivated to succeed.

How does Citizen Schools work?

We bring volunteer professionals into the classroom to teach their knowledge and expertise through project-based apprenticeships. When students are able to learn from authentic professionals, like you, they can start to make connections between what they are learning in school and the real world.

How do apprenticeships work?

Apprenticeships are 10 week volunteer-led classes that take place once a week from 4:15-5:40pm. The final student showcase at the end of the apprenticeship, called the "WOW!," allows students the opportunity to share what they've learned and accomplished throughout the semester.

What type of support do volunteers receive?

Each volunteer is supported by a Citizen Schools co-teacher who works with you to develop and facilitate the lessons. We also offer two trainings at the beginning of the semester and debriefing sessions each week after your apprenticeship.
