Chestnut Grove Baptist Church

2299 Rosebud Road
770-963-7051

Our Vision:
We envision our church becoming an Acts 1:8 church by sharing God's love not only in the local community but to the uttermost parts of the world, thus fulfilling the Great Commission.

Our Purpose:
To equip our members for the work and ministry of the church by providing spirit-filled worship, instruction through teaching and preaching, and ministry to those in the church, community, and world.

History:
For over 150 years, Chestnut Grove Baptist Church has served its members and the community. We are on a mission with Jesus in building His kingdom as we share God's love with others.

1850
Nine men meeting in a brush arbor decided to begin a church in the Grayson community and named it Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Their first purchase was two acres for $5 on which was constructed a log building that was used for both church and school.

1873
After a few years, they decided to sell the log building and construct another frame building on the property that served as the church.

1886
Sunday School was organized. Even though the church only met monthly, they wanted to make sure the children and adults could learn more about the Bible. The first Sunday School was called Evergreen.

Then The 20'" Century Dawns
Bit by bit, piece by piece, more land was purchased and a dream began to form. The members of Chestnut Grove decided to build a new sanctuary.

August 26, 1911
The sanctuary was complete. It measured 60' X 60' and was 3600 square feet. Some members had been faithful to their vision and to God. But not without some skepticism. Perhaps, they felt a little like Noah when he built the ark. They probably heard comments like, 'We only have a few members, why do we need such a large sanctuary? Why do we need two aisles? All the other churches around us only have one. We only meet once a month, what a waste." Chestnut Grove was probably the largest church in the county in 1911.

1948
Membership is up. The area has grown, and the church has agreed to meet weekly.

1954
Changes are needed. A brick addition was added to the back of the sanctuary. It provided Sunday School rooms, a pastor's study, church office, library, baptistery, kitchen, dining room and rest rooms.

1968
More space is needed. The brick annex was built which added nurseries,
Sunday School rooms, a fellowship hall, kitchen and restrooms.

1984
New people - more families - the area has changed from a sleepy farming
community to a suburb of Atlanta. The Family Ministry Building was built which added approximately 16,000 square feet in a building that measured 100' X 120'. It provided a gym, kitchen, stage, Sunday School rooms, and restrooms. The bottom floor of the brick annex was renovated and turned into a downstairs nursery and Sunday School rooms.

1991
The sanctuary is in need of much repair. The pews and pulpit furniture were redone: the inner sanctuary wall was extended; a new sub floor and new carpet was added; the choir loft and pulpit stage were redone; new choir chairs were purchased; new sound system was installed: and a new electrical wiring system was needed, including new lights.

1999 - And A New Century Is Dawning
Pastors have been called out of this church, along with missionaries, deacons, and Sunday School Teachers. Boys and girls and men and women have been saved in this church. The present sanctuary has served well for close to a century, but it has worn out. Chestnut Grove has another dream - a new vision. We have a dream to pass a vibrant, growing church down to our children and grandchildren. In order to do this we are constructing a new sanctuary. We need a new building that will take us into the twenty-first century.
