Calapooia Free Methodist Church Of Sutherlin

333 Church Road
541-459-2557

History

The Calapooia Free Methodist Church started with the prayers of an old crippled civil war veteran, Sylvanus Payne White, who spent time praying at a hillside stump that God would provide a Church for his family and the people in the area to worship in. Though he never lived long enough to see that prayer answered, it was answered 20 years later in the summer of 1918.

After revival services in the summer of 1918 under the ministry of D.O. Dodge, District Elder of the Southern Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church, many came to faith in Christ and the Calapooia Free Methodist Church was formally established.

For many years the Church met in the orchard groves, a preacher's shack, and in the home of Ezra and Nellie Baird. Then the people started to meet in an old abandoned Episcopal Methodist Church, which they eventually purchased and worshipped in until they moved into the present facility on Church Road in 1966.

Since then, CFMC has been a church that actively participates in the community of Sutherlin and greater Douglas County.

Today

CFMC has opportunitites for all ages to grow in their Christian walk.  From loving care in the nursery to Sunday school and midweek programs for children and youth to Bible studies and vespers for adults to fellowship and outings for senior adults, CFMC is a supportive, family environment.

In the fall of 2014, Calapooia Christian Preschool was opened at our property on Church Road to give families a low cost, Christian education experience for their preschool-age children to prepare them for kindergarten.

CFMC is represented throughout the community with members giving their time with the Lions Club, Calapooia Reflections Museum, Woofstock,  Sutherlin Blackberry Festival, and many other events and organizations.
