Students and staff at Bowne-Munro School are excited about learning! And they talk about it inside and outside the classroom! "Learning at Bowne-Munro School isn’t paper and pencil and tests. It’s fun!" Students are self-directed, self-motivated, independent learners who experience personal success and collaborate effectively with others to achieve a communal sense of pride and accomplishment. Students at Bowne-Munro regularly engage in independent research on self-selected topics and present their research to peers and students in other grade levels. As "researchers" they are accessing information from a variety of sources and applying their skills in reading, writing, social studies, and science. As "teachers" they are acquiring a sense of audience and purpose along with organizational and presentation skills. They and their teachers engage in cross-grade level activities that foster team building and illustrate curriculum integration.
In 1997, Bowne-Munro School was recognized as a National School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. At Bowne, we continue to achieve excellence by providing our students with a content-rich curriculum coupled with opportunities to identify and to build upon their individual strengths and talents. Cross-grade level activities and programs such as Kinderbuddies and Student Directed Learning enable our students to develop those skills they will need to be successful in the 21st century. Not only must students possess content knowledge and basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, they must also see the connections among subject areas and apply their knowledge to new situations. They must be able to collaborate and to function as effective team members and leaders. We can proudly say that the students at Bowne-Munro School are well on their way to meet the challenges of a new and exciting century.
