About

West Reading Borough has been an incorporated political subdivision of the Commonwealth since March 18, 1907, and will celebrate its Centennial in 2007. West Reading is proud to be the very first Main Street Community in Berks County and boasts a rich and proud tradition.

West Reading is in the center of many of the new and exciting projects underway in Berks County. The RiverPlace project will vastly change the waterfront of West Reading and the Initiative for a Competitive Greater Reading (ICGR) will include the shoppes and bistros of Main Street in the new corridor of entertainment and culture in Berks County. Additional development plans are underway and additional projects are planned for the near future. West Reading is proud to be home to the largest employer in Berks "The Reading Hospital and Medical Center" as well as the largest novelty candy maker in the world "Palmer Candies."

The Borough Hall is located at 500 Chestnut Street in West Reading, Pennsylvania and is open 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday. Located in the Borough Hall are the Administration Offices including the Borough Manager, our Police Department, Codes/Zoning Compliance Office, Treasurer, and Recreation Coordinator's Offices. Our Public Works Department works out of the Borough Maintenance Facility at 1st and Chestnut Streets. Our brand new Fire Company is located at 223 Playground Drive, right near the Borough Swimming Pool and Playground.

The original West Reading Borough Hall was built in 1927 as a replica of the Delaware State House. In 2000 an addition was added to the structure as it stands today. The Borough is governed by a council-manager form of government. There are seven Council Members and a Mayor who are elected by the voters. The Chief Administrative Officer is a Borough Manager who is appointed by Council and responsible for day-to-day operations in the Borough. Mayor Kevin S. Barnhardt is in charge of the Police Department.
