About Us:

When people stroll the village streets of East Hampton, Southampton, or Sag Harbor, it almost always means a stop into BookHampton, the family-run bookstores that have served the Hamptons community for over 40 years. Though the Hamptons are often perceived as a Summer resort, BookHampton has forever been a mainstay of the local, year-round population as well as the Summer crowds.

With a rich selection, a warm and inviting style, and a famously educated and friendly staff that is always ready to recommend a book (or three), BookHampton is beloved for offering the intimate bookstore experience that has become so rare in this era of anonymous and drab mega-chain stores.

The Hamptons have always been a haven for literary creativity, with a remarkable list of American authors migrating to the area. Just a few notables: John Steinbeck, James Fennimore Cooper, Kurt Vonnegut, Harriet Beecher Stowe, John O'Hara, Jean Stafford, Joseph Heller, William Gaddis, George Plimpton, Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Earnest Hemingway and Truman Capote.

BookHampton is known for its top-tier readings, signings, and discussions, which take place at all three BookHampton locations. The Summer months are the busiest in terms of events, and the schedule is always available in the store and at BookHampton.com. During the Summer, the East Hampton store is open past 10pm every evening, often until Midnight. Located across the street from the village's movie theater, the store has become a customary late-night destination.

Authors who have read at BookHampton include E. L. Doctorow, the late Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut, Edward Albee, Nelson DeMille, Richard Price, Gregory McGuire, Julie Andrews, Eric Carle, Alan Furst, Brett Easton Ellis, Jay McInerney, Alice McDermott, Adam Gopnik, Jonathan Safran Foer, James Salter, Dava Sobel, Alec Baldwin, Lee Child, and countless others. The area is rich with talent; many times, the audience at a BookHampton reading includes numerous other writers and artists!

Each BookHampton store has itss own distinct rhythm and feeling, making them each worth a visit. A special effort has always been made at every store to stock a strong selection of local-interest and local-author books, often signed.

BookHampton also offers an unusual service for the most discriminating patrons of literature: personal library creation and consultation, for yourself or as an extraordinary gift. Personal libraries have ranged from 20 to 20,000 books, each carefully selected by the BookHampton staff to fulfill the desire of the customer. Curious about building a rich, diverse library? BookHampton ships all over the world.

The BookHampton.com blog website has recently begun posting engaging recommendations and write-ups from the stores' owners and staff, highlighting favorite new books in many genres - the website is a great place to learn about what's coming up at BookHampton, and to discover a book that you'll just have to pick up in the store. Stop into BookHampton, and browse happy.
