Birches Elementary School

416 Westminster Boulevard

Birches School’s mission is to enable its students to develop their self-worth through interpersonal skills, while promoting positive attitudes and fostering honesty, integrity, academic excellence, and good citizenship. The philosophy of “open doors, open hearts” is lived out each day. During the 2004-2005 school year, Birches School was recognized for a Best Practice by the New Jersey Department of Education, Promoting Positive Peer Relationships, which was developed to foster relationships and sensitivity by challenging students of all abilities to communicate about their experiences and feelings. Interactive lessons presented by the counselor and supported by classroom teachers have helped to enhance the climate of Birches School by providing students with strategies to resolve conflicts and make good choices.

Birches School, a unique educational community where each child learns with confidence, promotes a motto of “Excellence in Education.” Creative and innovative teaching practices, outstanding curriculum, exemplary professional development, and extended learning community underscore Birches School’s commitment to excellence. This desire to provide an extraordinary model of education was recognized by the state of New Jersey in 2004-2005. Birches School was recognized as both a Governor’s School of Excellence and a Star School. These prestigious awards are a testament to the hard work and outstanding programs that make Birches a leader in the educational community.

The heart and soul of education are curricular opportunities for children. The curriculum challenges students and teachers to better understand and implement the Core Curriculum Content Standards in a meaningful way. Continued integration of the Everyday Math program in grades one through five has provided students with concrete activities and games to display their unique talents and work together. The Social Studies curriculum implemented a standards based curriculum through the support of a wide range of new reading and multi-media materials. The business community has been engaged in the life of Birches School. Through the generous donations of the Washington Township Education Foundation (WTEF), the students enjoyed several Electronic Field Trips.
