Bethesda Presbyterian Church

90 Bethesda Road
540-348-5314

Bethesda Presbyterian Church was organized in 1821 at Wilson Springs.  The name comes from the story of Jesus’ miracle recounted in the Gospel of John, where Jesus heals the paralytic at the Bethesda Pool in Jerusalem (John 5:2-9).  After meeting for many years at the Springs, in school buildings, and sharing a church building with a Methodist congregation, the first Bethesda Church was dedicated in 1843.  A manse was built in 1869 and the current church was built in 1876 – replacing the 1843 building.

In 1909, the Bell Tower of Bethesda Church was added and the church was extensively renovated. Three Tiffany windows were installed as memorials.  The round window is in memory of Dr. and Mrs. McElwee.  The others are symbolic of the River of Life flowing out from the Throne of God, and are in memory of former ministers and elders.

Our Vision

Bethesda Presbyterian Church and McElwee Chapel constitute a church family that strives to share God's love and care with its members and its local and worldwide community.

At Bethesda and McElwee, you will find a group of individuals who are all striving toward one common purpose - to love and serve God in all aspects of life.  You will find individuals who find real joy in coming to church.   We are a diverse group, and we feel that diversty makes us stronger.   We welcome all who come through our doors - to sing, to worship, to learn, to grow, and join us for fellowship.  We hope that you will come and find out what we're all about!
