About Us

Bell Gardens Intermediate School (BGI) is located in the city of Bell Gardens, California, an urban community of over 44,000 residents located approximately eight miles from downtown Los Angeles. Known as the “Hub of Progress”, the city is located on a 2.4 square mile area and is a blend of commercial and residential areas where city officials are constantly working towards improving the city’s image. The city has a relatively youthful population. The median age of the city’s population is 23.8 years.

The student data serves over 2,100 students in fifth through eighth grades. BGI provides services to approximately 140 Resource Specialist Program Students and 81 Special Day Class Students. Approximately 252 students are clustered in Gifted and Talented Education classes where students receive differentiated learning opportunities to meet their specific needs. 50 percent of the fifth grade, 50 percent of the sixth grade, 48 percent of the seventh grade, and 40 percent of the eighth grade students are classified as English Language Learners and receive their instruction through a Bilingual Program, Structured English Immersion or Mainstream English options. Parents select the instructional program for their child with the assistance of the school’s Bilingual Facilitator.

Bell Gardens Intermediate School serves students from working class and low-income homes. The median family income for the city is $23,819 annually. Housing within the community consists of single-family homes, multiple-family lots, apartments and a small trailer community. BGI students have strong Latino roots. 98.50% of the student body is Latino, .95% are White/Anglo and .55% are from other ethnic descent. Within the l’s Latino population there exists a mixture of first generation students as well as second, third and fourth generation Latinos.

The school was constructed in 1938 as a WPA Project and was first named Bell Gardens Junior High. School facilities include an indoor gym, a 636- seat auditorium, cafeteria library/media center and sports fields on 16.5 acres of land. The age of the plant requires constant care and maintenance to keep the school a safe, clean and attractive environment.
