Bartlesville Art Association
History of the Bartlesville Art Association
After painting together in Herb Sheller's studio for several years, a group of artists approached city officials for permission to use a dilapidated city-owned building, originally used as a park shelter, for their permanent home. Permission was given and over the years, both BAA and the City of Bartlesville have made many improvements to the Art Center inJohnstone Park.
On May 13, 1952, the group drafted a constitution and became formally know as the Bartlesville Artists Association. In 1965, we incorporated, becoming a tax-exempt not-for-profit organization. The name was also changed to the Bartlesville Art Association to encourage the membership of not just artist but anyone who appreciated art and was interested in promoting the visual arts in Bartlesville.
The Bartlesville Art Association is a member of the The Allied Arts and Humanities Council. It sponsors both exhibits by member artists and state or national touring exhibits. Classes and workshops are sponsored, as well as monthly programs pertaining to the visual arts. Annual scholarships are presented to high school students of the visual arts. Additional grant and scholarship monies can be awarded to other organizations who provide training in the visual arts to either youth or adult students.
On August 18, 1999, a Corporate Charter was granted by the State of Oklahoma for the Bartlesville Art Association Foundation and approval has been receied by the IRS to permit the Foundation to receive tax-exempt gifts for the long term benefit of the Art Association.
