Barkley Elementary School Mission Statement:

The mission statement of Barkley School is to create a safe school environment wherein each student increases his/her achievement and learns social skills necessary for future success.

Goals of Barkley Elementary School:
  • To improve the academic achievement of each student.
  • To develop a “community of learners” wherein each student is valued, supported and encouraged to become the best person and student he/she can be.
  • To encourage each student to make our school and his/her world a better place.
There has never been a better time to be involved in the education of young children. We have never before known as much as we know today about our students; how they think, learn, and interact with one another. We have every reason to believe that we can achieve our goals with parent cooperation and support.

History of Barkley Elementary School:

Barkley Elementary School has a long history of service to young students in the Phoenixville Community. The building was completed in 1930 and opened as the Memorial Junior High School. For the next 34 years it served many students who graduated and continued their education at the Phoenixville High School.

In 1964 a new junior high school opened, the same one that is now the Phoenixville Middle School. Another elementary school was needed, so this building became the Samuel K. Barkley Elementary School. Mr. Barkley, who lived in Phoenixville on Gay St., served on the School Board for 25 years and was president for 9 of those years. He rode horses, liked gardening and grew showcase roses. In 1990 the staff and students were moved to the Middle School for a year and a half, and Barkley School was beautifully renovated to what it is today.
