Barker Middle School

319 E. Barker Road
219-873-2057

The Barker Middle School Community is dedicated to providing a safe, caring, and nurturing environment where all students are challenged to master the state standards. Students who do not master the state standards are provided with access to alternative plans and programs.

Barker Middle School is located in the beautiful wooded Edgewood community. It is one of three middle schools in Michigan City with approximately 420 sixth to eighth grade students. Barker provides a safe, orderly, and caring environment for all to learn, grow and be successful. Barker’s organizational structure is designed with the middle school concept as its focus. The teachers are on teams where groups of students are placed. There are three teams, one at each grade level, 6-8. The teams have names: eighth grade, Admirals; seventh grade, Brigadier Generals; and sixth grade, Captains. The team concept is designed to support students academically and emotionally to become more responsible adolescents. Our teams of teachers meet daily.

Student achievement is monitored on a regular basis through continued assessment, progress reports, handbook signatures, and report cards. To bridge the gap between elementary and middle school, a transition program is in place for incoming fifth grade students.

Two honors programs are held each school year and there is a National Junior Honor Society for those students who qualify.

An active Parent Advisory Group meets monthly to plan and organize activities involving the entire school.
